A sense of wonder is a precious gift.
And a child naturally has wonder in abundance.
Eyes that see everything for the first time;
Not knowing, but without shame,
Often falling, but not easily discouraged,
Always experimenting, and never satisfied,
Open to new information, ready for new experiences,
Joyful for every discovery, eager for every encounter.
And yet somehow, wonder is easy to lose.
The more we know, the harder it is be ignorant.
The older we are, the more we expect to know,
The harder it is to be questioning and unsure.
Yet, being unsure and filled with wonder is the only way to learn the most important lessons in life.
Love for example. We never fully know what it is.
And if we still marvel at it, then it surely still exists.
Kindness too. It is precisely when we know not why someone was kind to us, that truly makes us wonder.
Laughter too! Ever wonder what humor is?
And don’t say “your face!” Or you could.
Just goes to show it may not be what we can explain that makes us most alive.
Friendship too. What makes us friends?
If ever we were sure of the reasons we deserve friendship, perhaps it is then that friendship truly doesn’t exist.
A little mystery, and healthy wonder make for a beautiful connection.
May we never know too much to be uncurious,
Never care too much to be unsure,
Never too cool to ask questions,
And never too old to stand in wonder.
Life gets harder as we get older.
That is for sure.
Yet if we stay always a little like children,
Life can be wonder-ful!
